Express Light Bulbs has the right replacement
Aquarium Metal Halide light bulb for your aquarium tropical fish tank lighting needs.
Common Questions
How often should I replace the bulbs?
The color spectrum of any lamp will change with time and Aquarium bulbs typically need to be replaced every 6-8 months.
What wattage and color temperature do I will I need?
Deeper aquariums require extra or stronger bulbs. Simply check your lighting hood to find what size and wattage of light bulb you will need. General purpose aquarium bulb offers decorative lighting to enhance the mood of any aquatic landscape. Clear bulbs create a more natural appearance. We offer different wattages and colors to suit your specific needs. Express Light Bulbs carry only the highest quality metal halide aquarium light bulbs to ensure color temperatures are accurately represented. 10k lamps have a nice crisp white, while 14K aquarium lamps can go from a blue/white to very blue and 65K bulbs seem more like that of sunlight.
How much time does it take to a metal halide bulb to restart?
It may take up to 10-12 minutes to restart.
Why do metal halide lightbulbs flicker or turn off?
New metal halide light bulbs may require up to 100 hours to settle in and may flicker and or turn off during the "break in" period. If the bulbs have run for ample time and flicker and or turn off then it would be wise to check that the correct ballast is being used for your lamp.
Can I overdrive a metal halide Aquarium bulb?
Yes, Overdriving a Aquarium metal halide bulb may possibly explode or burn up both the ballast and bulb.
Can I operate a metal halide lamp on DC current?
No, most all metal halide lamps are manufactured to run on AC current only.
How long should I operate my Aquarium Bulbs?
When running your metal halide without any other light source, we recommend that you operate them about 12 hours per day. If you are using other lighting as well, such as linear fluorescents or compact fluorescents, you can operate the metal halides 7-10 hours per day in with supplemental lighting at the same time. For example, the fluorescent lighting could be turned on 1-2 hours before the metal halides and be turned off 1-2 hours after the metal halides are turned off.
What does the K Rating stand for?
The K at the end the Aquarium Metal Halide bulb stands for Kelvin. This is used as measurement of the color temperature rating. The greater the Kelvin rating is, the bluer the color given off by the bulb. Typically, the color given off by the 10,000K is considered being a perfect white color.
How many MH Bulbs do I need for my aquarium?
We recommend one bulb for every two feet of length of the tank.
Should I supplement my metal halide lighting?
Light Bulbs in the blue end of the spectrum are very beneficial to corals. Fluorescent Bulbs in the 5500K - 6500K spectrum often do well with Metal Halide Bulbs.
