1. Replace your regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. You can achieve the same level of brightness with a 15-watt energy efficient fluorescent light bulb as you can with a standard 60-watt bulb. Yet the lower wattage bulb uses as much as 72 percent less energy than its incandescent counterpart – and it lasts 10 times longer, too!
2. Change your outdoor security lighting to high-efficiency bulbs. You can save up to 80 percent on outdoor lighting costs by using higher efficiency incandescent or watt misers, compact fluorescent or Metal Halide bulbs.
3. Use a motion sensor for outdoor security lighting. Because it only lights when activated, it uses far less electricity. This simple electronic device turns on the light whenever it senses motion, whether it’s an intruder or you and your family coming home at night.
4. Switch off lights in unoccupied spaces. It sounds simple, but can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your total electricity use.
5. Install dimmer switches. By reducing the light level in a room by 10 percent, you not only save energy but you double the life of your bulbs.
6. Turn off decorative outdoor gas lamps. Eight gas lamps burning year-round use as much natural gas as it takes to heat an average-sized home for an entire winter.
7. Use cordless area lights. These battery-operated lights easily affix to any wall or flat surface. With a tap of your hand, they emit enough light to safely guide your way.
