As a professional landscaper I had grown tired of spending top dollar on plants from local garden centers. I wanted to expand my landscaping company to include a nursery where I could grow my own plants. I hoped that this would give me a competitive edge and that I could pass the savings down to my customers. My belief was that if I could save my company money by reducing the cost that we spend on plants, my customers could share in the savings. Plus, I also liked the idea of growing my own plants because I could guarantee that they were of high quality.
From being in the landscaping business I knew a little about growing plants and agriculture. I had a greenhouse built on my property and I consulted a lighting company to help me to efficiently light my nursery. I was surprised to find that there were different lights and different bulbs needed to perform specific tasks. For instance, hps bulbs, (high pressure sodium) produce light in the orange and red area of the color spectrum. This specific range of light is responsible for stimulating flowering in plants. hps bulbs are commonly used for flowering and fruiting plants and trees. These hps bulbs are also known for having a longer life than some of the other comparable bulbs.
I had no idea about the impact that lighting had on plant growth. I believed that you would get the same results from any light source. I also was unaware of the technological advances that had been made in LED grow lighting. I liked that these products were energy efficient and affordable. I am very relieved that I sought out the expert advice of a lighting manufacturer because I would not have known which specific light produced the results that I desired.
After my greenhouse was completed, the lightning was installed. I had specific areas set up for seed germination that were lit up by the LED growing lights. I also had a specific area designed for the budding and flowering shrubs, like my rose bushes. I could not wait for my greenhouse to be fully operational so that I could rely upon my own plants to fulfill my landscaping obligations. I would be saving both myself and my customers a lot of money off of the high overhead costs that were associated with buying from the garden centers.
