The latest technology that is being used in nurseries and greenhouses across the country is led plant grow lighting. These lights are much more energy efficient and cost effective and they are just as successful in stimulating plant growth as metal halide lighting. I had first seen the technology at an agricultural trade show and I was highly impressed. These lights could supposedly provide up to 50,000 hours of light and they used 80% less energy than the lights that I had been using in my greenhouse. While these figures were highly impressive, I was worried about the cost of the lighting.

After the trade show I went back to my nursery and started calculating some costs. I was really interested in converting from the metal halide lights that I had been using to the newer led plant lights. It seemed as if I always had a bulb out on my metal halide lights. The bulbs were expensive to replace and I had to order them from a manufacturer and wait for them to arrive. And, shipping and handling on those bulbs wasn’t cheap either. I remember one occasion when I had waited a few weeks for the replacement bulbs to arrive only to find out that they had shattered during the shipping process. I was very disappointed to say the least.

I also did not like the fact that the halide lights gave off such an intense heat. I was always worried about the risk of fire in such a moist environment. I knew that the led plant lights would be a great alternative method. After some calculating I saw that I could afford to replace my entire lighting system with the more energy efficient LED lights. I was very happy that I would have the opportunity to make my nursery safer and much more environmentally friendly. I also knew that my customers would be very impressed by the conversion and my use of innovation in protecting our resources.

Once the entire conversion was made I couldn’t have been more pleased with my new LED lighting. My plants grew at the same rate as they had with the metal halide lights and I saw a significant reduction in my electricity bill. I was very happy that I had made the switch and I felt as if I had made a positive change that would be better for our environment.
