I never knew that fish lighting was so essential to the overall health of my tank. When I first set up my aquarium I had just purchased an overhead light that I put over my tank. It seemed to work fine but then I started to lose fish in my aquarium to disease. My local pet store where I had purchased the fish from offered to test my water if I brought a sample of it in. They informed me that there was a specific kind of algae growth in the tank that was harmful to the fish.
I explained that I had a great filtration system and they asked me about the type of lighting that I used. I responded that I used a regular overhead lamp for fish lighting. The employee at the pet store explained that he believed that my lighting selection was what was causing the disturbance in my tank. He patiently informed me how aquarium lighting worked. Regular lamps do not contain spectral range needed for a healthy tank and that are required to make sure that the tank’s beauty is optimized. There were specific aquarium light bulbs that were designed for this specific purpose. The aquarium lights came in a variety of wattages and models depending upon the type of tank and aquatic life that I had.
We discussed what type of aquarium light would best suit my aquarium’s needs. I purchased the light and brought it home. The pet store employee also stressed the importance of regularly replacing the bulb since it loses some of its important characteristics and effectiveness before it dies out. The bulbs at the pet store were pretty expensive so I decided to look them up online when I got home, and I found a website that sold them for less than half the price.
After I installed the proper fish lighting I waited. Within a week there was a noticeable difference in the tank, it seemed much clearer and the plants seemed to look much more vibrant. Several months later my tank has taken on a completely healthier appearance. The corals have grown and my fish appear much more active. The colors in the tank seem much more vibrant and alive. I was unaware of the instrumental role that fish lighting played in my aquarium but I am very happy that I have it all sorted out now. My tank has never looked better.
