Can I use screw-in CFL bulbs with my dimmers?
Most Standard screw-in (self-ballasted) CFLs are not dimmable as stated on their packages. You have to use Dimmable CFL's on standard dimmers. If you don't it can cause the lamp and/ or the dimmer to fail.

What about the screw-in CFLs that say they are dimmable?
We recommend using them with standard incandescnt dimmers with the exception of Lutron dimmers

Why can I dim my incandescent bulb but not my CFL?
A standard screw-in CFL, like any fluorescent light bulb, requires a ballast to make it work. The ballast needs to be small to fit inside the base of the screw-in CFL; because of the ballast’s size, some of the required components for dimming are left out, which results in poor performance when used with a dimmer. In contrast, an incandescent light bulb doesn’t require a ballast to make it work.
Are there any energy-saving alternatives to using CFLs?
Yes, you can use halogen bulbs instead. They are more energy efficient than standard incandescent bulbs, provide excellent light quality, and are fully dimmable with all Standard dimmers. However, they are not as energy efficient as Compact Fluorescents.
