How to Replace a T8 Light Ballast
Fluorescent lighting is becoming more and more popular as the urge to go green takes over the world. These lights save energy and are much more cost efficient to use than normal incandescent light bulbs. The fluorescent light ballast is a very important part of what makes fluorescent lighting work whether in your home or your office. It is the part that regulates the amount of energy that flows into your
fluorescent light bulbs and makes your fixture work. Unfortunately, sometimes these ballasts quit working and must be changed. If you must change the ballast for your fluorescent light, it is much easier to do when you have someone to help you.
Steps to Changing a Fluorescent Light Ballast
- Gather all of your supplies before starting this project. It is important in any project to have all of your supplies close at hand. For this project you will need a ladder (preferably a very sturdy ladder with rubber grips), a screwdriver (normally a Phillips head, but you should check your ballast to make sure), and a new ballast.
- Once you have gathered all of your supplies, please make sure that you have turned off all of the electricity to the ballast that you are having to replace. The safest way to do that is to simply turn off the breaker. This is a very important step, as changing a ballast without turning off the electricity will generally result in a worse problem than a broken ballast (such as death or serious injury…things that it is best to avoid!)
- When the electricity is off and it is safe to proceed, you may then take off the plastic covering protecting the fixture. This is a simple process that requires you to push the sides together and pull. Once you have done that, the covering should come off easily.
- Take any fluorescent light bulbs out of the fixture and gently place them out of the way. These light bulbs may break easily, so be very careful.
- Your next step is to remove the metal covering the T8 ballast. This metal covering normally comes off in the same way the plastic one did.
- Remove the wing nuts from both the hot wire and the ground wire to separate the house wires from the ballast wires. Be sure to replace the wing nuts onto the house wires for safety until you are ready to hook them to the new ballast wires.
- With your screwdriver, remove the screws holding the old ballast to the ceiling or wall. Place it safely out of the way so that no one will trip on it.
- Once you have completely removed the old ballast, align the new ballast and screw it in where they old one was screwed in.
- Connect the new ballast wires to the house wires with the wing nuts.
- Replace the metal cover.
- Reinstall the fluorescent light bulb or bulbs.
- Replace the plastic cover.
- Restore the electricity to the ballast.
You have now completed all of the steps necessary to replace a F32/T8 fluorescent lighting ballast. Congratulations!
